Window Bakery Cartons: Define the Pack Before the Artwork

A window bakery box brief needs more than a finished box size. Identify the product, its board or tray, the decorated height, and how staff will place it inside. For a mixed pastry range, list the largest item and the intended assortment rather than sizing from one photograph.

Set the Internal Dimensions and Loading Method

Provide usable internal length, width and height, together with the cake board, liner or insert dimensions. Allow room for toppings and for hands or tools used during packing. State whether the product loads from the top and whether the box must arrive flat or assembled.

Check a trial pack with the actual product arrangement. Review side clearance, lid closure, removal and the stability of any proposed insert. A close-fitting box should not press against decoration or make unpacking difficult.

Choose the Window Position and Construction

Mark the area customers need to see. Keep folds, tuck tabs and artwork clear of the proposed cutout, and ask for review of the remaining board around it. Confirm the window component, attachment method and any contact with the product or its inner wrapping.

For chilled products, greasy pastries or moist fillings, share the actual storage and handling conditions. Request material information and relevant supporting documents for the intended use. Do not treat a clear panel or a paperboard appearance as evidence of barrier performance or food-contact suitability.

Review Printing and Finishing on a Sample

Supply a logo, artwork files, colour references and the required information panels. Decide which text must remain readable when the carton is closed or displayed beside other packs. Review printing and any proposed finishing against the chosen board and window construction before approving production artwork.

Separate Display Packaging from Transport Protection

Describe counter display, takeaway handling and any courier shipment separately. Review the packed weight, base support, stacking arrangement and outer shipping protection using a representative sample. Define the handling checks and acceptance criteria with the supplier rather than assuming the retail carton is a shipping box.
