Start with the Product and Its Sales Channel
Measure the product at its widest points, including closures and accessories. Explain whether the pack is for a retail shelf, a gift presentation or parcel delivery. These uses can require different opening styles, inserts and outer protection.
What Should the Design Brief Include?
Provide the product weight, dimensions, required pack quantity and destination. Add reference images, brand guidelines and required on-pack text. Identify the information buyers need to see first, such as the product name, variant or usage instructions. A clear brief gives each design option a practical basis for review.
Compare Fit, Presentation and Material Evidence
Check the complete pack rather than its appearance alone. Compare the opening, product fit, label area and assembly steps. Ask for the proposed board, coatings, adhesives and inserts to be identified. Any recycling or material-content statement needs evidence for that structure and its intended market.

Prepare Artwork for the Agreed Structure
Dieline: use the agreed dimensions, cut lines, folds and glue areas. Confirm the file version before placing artwork.
Print files: ask for the required format, bleed, resolution and color setup. Include fonts or outlined text as requested.
Finishes: mark the exact areas intended for foil, embossing or other proposed finishes on separate layers.
Readable details: review small type, barcodes, warnings and product information at the final printed size.
Review the Opening and Product Fit
A visual mockup can help assess artwork placement. A physical sample is needed to check dimensions, closure, insert fit and handling. Agree which sample type is being reviewed and what it can demonstrate.
Opening: check how the buyer lifts, slides or unfolds the pack and removes the product.
Fit: review clearance around the product and confirm that inserts do not obscure essential information.
Assembly: identify any folding, filling or accessory steps that your team will carry out.
Delivery: discuss outer cartons and any testing appropriate to the product and shipping route.
Agree on Sample and Production Checks
Record the approved structure, artwork version and acceptance criteria before placing an order.
Review dimensions, print alignment, color references, finish placement, closure and product fit against the agreed sample. Record any changes and confirm whether a revised sample is needed.
For regulated products or special functions, such as child-resistant openings, identify the applicable requirements and test evidence needed. Do not treat a drawing or an untested sample as compliance proof.
