Build a tea packaging brief around the tea format, its existing primary pack and the buyer experience. This resource helps tea brands separate product-protection requirements from the design of an outer carton, tube or gift presentation.
1. Identify what is actually being packed
- State whether you sell loose-leaf tea, sachets, tea bags, a tin, a sealed pouch or a gift assortment. List quantities and dimensions for each SKU.
- Identify the package that directly contains the tea. Explain whether the requested paper packaging surrounds an already sealed primary pack.
- If direct food contact or barrier performance is required, ask for a suitable construction and relevant evidence for the destination market. An outer paper pack should not be assumed to provide either.
2. Define the format and fit
- Supply the filled primary pack dimensions, weight and opening needs. Include seals, protrusions and shape changes that affect fit.
- Describe the intended display: single pack, gift set, refill presentation or retail collection. Ask the supplier to assess carton, tube or rigid-box options against this brief.
- Agree internal usable space, insert layout and assembly steps. Avoid adding layers solely to fill empty space; first review the fit and protection requirements.
3. Separate design from product information
- Provide brand artwork and identify required text areas. Assign responsibility for ingredient, origin, lot, date, storage and other market-specific information.
- Mark variable information and confirm how it will be applied. Check visibility and legibility on the assembled sample.
- State whether the customer needs access to brewing information, refill instructions or disposal guidance. Do not approve claims that lack supporting evidence.
4. Plan the sample review
- Test fit with the actual filled pack, including closures and any accessories. Check removal without damaging the primary package.
- Review presentation, assembly effort, print alignment, opening experience and the space occupied during storage and transport.
- Identify the storage and delivery conditions that need assessment. Agree the evidence or testing required instead of promising shelf life from the outer packaging design.
- Document approved dimensions, materials, artwork version and any unresolved differences between the sample and production proposal.
5. Prepare the RFQ
- Tea format / primary pack / packed dimensions and weight: ___
- SKU list / quantities / target market / destination: ___
- Preferred outer format / insert / required label areas: ___
- Artwork readiness / material documents / sample checks: ___
- Delivery requirement / assembly / packing and freight assumptions: ___
