What Is a Shoulder and Neck Box?

A shoulder and neck box has a separate lid, a base and an inner collar that extends above the base walls. The lid fits over that collar. Depending on the design, part of the collar remains visible as a band between the lid and base when the box is closed. Here, “neck” refers to the box construction.

Specify the Lid, Base and Collar Together

Begin with the product dimensions, filled weight and any accessories. Agree on the internal space, overall box height, lid depth and the amount of visible neck. Include drawings or reference images showing the closed and open positions so the intended proportions are clear.

The collar, board and wrapping materials all affect the lid fit. Ask for these to be specified together rather than selecting a board thickness in isolation. Review whether the lid lifts comfortably and sits evenly when closed.

Plan the Interior and Artwork

Explain how the product will sit inside and how it should be removed. If an insert is needed, provide the product or an agreed dimensional model for fit review. Discuss the proposed insert material, removal access and any protection requirements.

Mark the artwork position on the lid, visible neck and base. Check how patterns, borders and brand elements align across the separate pieces. Confirm the required files, color references and any proposed finish areas before sample approval.

Review a Physical Sample

• Measure the internal space and the visible neck band against the agreed drawing.
• Check lid clearance, opening effort and alignment on each side.
• Inspect corners, wrap edges, adhesive marks and artwork registration.
• Check product fit and access with the intended insert.
• Agree on any handling or transport tests needed for the actual product and route.

Prepare a Project Quotation

Send the dimensions, quantity, artwork status, insert requirements, destination and target date. Confirm the sample scope, minimum order, production schedule, packing method and costs for the project rather than relying on a general fixed promise.
