Eco Packaging

“Eco packaging” can describe an intention, but it does not identify a material specification or prove an environmental outcome. Start with the product and the claim your purchasing team needs to evaluate, then review the proposed pack as a whole.

Turn a General Label into a Clear Requirement

State whether the project prioritises reducing unnecessary layers, using documented recycled content, separating components, or another defined objective. Include the product dimensions and weight, quantity, destination and handling conditions.

Keep these objectives separate from claims already established by evidence. Do not substitute a kraft appearance, a plant-based ingredient or a supplier brochure for a documented result.

Keep Environmental Terms Distinct

• Recycled content: identifies material origin. Specify the component, percentage, calculation basis and pre-consumer or post-consumer source.
• Recyclability: concerns the finished construction and the relevant collection, sorting and reprocessing conditions.
• Compostability or biodegradability: needs evidence for the exact material and stated conditions; it is not the same as recycling.
• Reuse: requires a defined task and review of the proposed pack’s suitability. Keeping a box does not by itself establish a measured environmental benefit.

Review the Full Construction

Document board, wrap, coating or lamination, ink, adhesive, closure, window and insert. Ask which parts are bonded or removable and what evidence applies to each. Evaluate the product protection and packing task alongside the material objective.

Review Appearance and Function Separately from Claims

Use an agreed drawing and sample to check product fit, assembly, opening, removal, artwork and finish. Record any difference between the sample and proposed production materials. A prototype cannot establish recycled content or recyclability by feel.

Agree any separate tests needed for protection, contact suitability or handling. Quantified savings or environmental comparisons need an appropriate baseline and method; they are not assumed from a material substitution.

Confirm the Quotation and Approval Record

Share dimensions, quantities, destination, artwork status and supporting-document requirements. Agree sample charges, minimum order, production timing, packing and delivery terms for the actual specification.
