For a sustainable custom boxes project, turn the design objective into a specification that can be reviewed and approved. Define the product, proposed structure and evidence needed before selecting materials or environmental wording.

Define the Packaging Task and Baseline

Provide product dimensions and weight, units per box, quantity, destination, packing process and handling needs. If the project replaces an existing pack, record its dimensions, components and function so alternatives can be compared on the same basis.

Separate mandatory protection and usability requirements from preferences for appearance. A smaller or lighter design needs to be assessed alongside product fit, assembly, transport and the consequences of damage.

Compare the Proposed Components

List the board, paper wrap, printed layers, coating, adhesive, closure, ribbon and insert. Identify quantities, attachment methods and any components expected to be removed. Confirm availability for the specific design rather than assuming every material option is offered.

• Structure: compare the opening task, fit, assembly and storage or shipping volume.
• Inserts: review product positioning and removal using the real items.
• Closures: identify magnets, ribbons or other parts and the implications for assembly and separation.
• Finishes: include the proposed coating or film in both the appearance review and material record.

Approve Claims Against the Actual Specification

For recycled content, define the component, percentage and calculation basis. For certification, verify the relevant holder, current scope, chain of custody and permission to make the proposed claim. A supplier’s document does not automatically establish certification of Eastpkg® or the finished box.

For recyclability, assess the complete construction and the intended destination route. Compostability or biodegradability requires separate evidence and conditions. Water-based, plant-derived or paper-based descriptions do not establish that a finished pack is non-toxic or universally recyclable.

Record the exact statement, evidence and limitations with the artwork approval. Consult the materials and claims checklist.

Review a Sample and Control Revisions

Agree which production materials the sample represents and which details remain provisional. Check product fit, closure, removal, assembly, artwork and finish. Certification or environmental performance cannot be verified by feel or appearance.

Retain the approved specification and artwork version. Agree the acceptance criteria and how substitutions or revisions will be reviewed before production. Any required protection, handling or environmental assessment remains separate from a presentation sample.
